We're above the law, part 2

This William Jefferson case is really confusing to me, mostly because of the stupidity involved.

Let's recap. William Jefferson is on tape accepting a $100K bribe and had his home searched and $90K in cash was found in the freezer, disguised as leftovers (I guess that's as good as putting it in the mattress). Where's the other $10K?

So now the FBI isn't allowed to search his office, because he happens to be a member of Congress? Is he immune from ALL crimes? What if he shoots someone? Can they search his office to find plans?

The basis for this is the best part, the same arguement used in the GA DUI case we discussed a few months back - "that a legislator cannot be arrested while at session or traveling to or from them" Seems to me that's to prevent the Executive branch from forcing or preventing certain votes from being cast.

Anyway, I expect William Jefferson to call foul. I'm only a little surprised Pelosi won't cut him loose. What I don't expect Dennis Hastert and the Republican leadership to agree with him. On the other hand, the republican leadership is absolutely pathetic, and has no clue as to what they're doing. Hastert? DeLay? Frist? Wow. Maybe John Boehner will prove himself, but somehow, I doubt it.

This is idiotic. Republicans DESERVE to lose when they pull this crap. Congress needs a massive shakeup. In the meantime, Linder's talking about a new Contract w/ America with the Fairtax on the list. Sounds like a good idea to me, maybe the leadership will get turned on its head.
